Zelenskiy: Foreign fighters are given Ukrainian citizenship

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday, January 22 (2nd century) a draft law that would allow foreigners fighting against Russian forces in the country to acquire Ukrainian citizenship.

Thousands of foreigners moved to Ukraine at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to help stop Moscow’s forces trying to overthrow and take control of the Ukrainian state.

“Foreign volunteers who have taken up arms to defend Ukraine are fighting for freedom just like their homeland. Ukraine will become their homeland,” Zelenskiy said in a statement on social media.

He announced a new draft law that would allow Ukrainians to acquire dual citizenship of any country in the world except Russia.

Zelenskyi said he also signed a decree on the regions of Russia where Ukrainians have historically lived, but did not give further details.

He said, the purpose of the document is “to reveal the historical truth of the past for the future of Ukraine”.

In the war with Russia, Kiev has received a large amount of weapons from the West and thousands of citizens of several countries are fighting side by side with Ukrainian forces.

Among them, the Belarusian and Russian combat units are also included. These two countries are called “aggressor countries” by Kiev, because Russian forces have also attacked Ukraine from the territory of Belarus.
