Since September 2019, Oshima has been appearing as an assistant on TOKYO MX’s “Barairo Dandy”. In April this year, she became the new MC of the same station’s “5ji ni Muchuu!” We asked her about child-rearing, her work, and the reason she started her YouTube channel “Kanpai to Oshima Yukari” where she candidly talks without makeup, as well as her future plans.

–Have you gotten used to hosting “5ji ni Muchuu!”?
The guests on each day are very generous and tease us, and to be honest, it’s such a rich experience that I wonder if it’s still one season?
-What kind of image did you have of the show in the past?
I’ve always been a big fan of the show, and it was the show that launched Matsuko into the public eye, so I thought it was a really interesting show because it featured a cast of quirky characters (laughs). But I never thought I’d end up appearing on it.
-Was there any gap between the way Fuji TV programs are produced?
The content of the topics they handle and the way they cover them are very edgy. When I was a station announcer, I had the opportunity to experience straight news. MX cuts into the core of human values that everyone is interested in. I think that’s what’s great about MX.
–For example, what kind of news would interest you?
Recently, we ran an article comparing the most expensive and cheapest stations on the Yamanote Line, based on how much the price of a glass of draft beer differs. The most expensive was Ebisu Station. While you might think that Ueno would be cheap, Matsuko commented with interest, “It’s recently become a very prosperous and popular town for young people, so the prices are going up,” and “The northwest area is definitely cheaper,” as they discussed the chart.

–When you were working at Fuji TV, you were in charge of evening news. What was your commute like?
Most of my career was in nighttime programs. I had the feeling that work was something you did at night. My routine was to come to work in the evening, finish the program at midnight, and leave work at 1am.
–You said on your YouTube channel that even if you finished work at 1 a.m., there were few days when you went straight home.
That’s right. After the show ended, I would go to a drinking party with the staff at the izakaya “Shosho” in front of Odaiba Station at 1am. I would go home at 4am and go to sleep. I wanted to drink as early as possible, so I didn’t have the option of crossing the Rainbow Bridge and waiting until I got to a bar in Shibaura or Hamamatsucho (laughs).
–I imagine fans flocked to Odaiba’s Warau Warau when they saw Oshima Yukari.
No no. I don’t think there are many people who start drinking at 1am in Odaiba. Everyone around me was in the same business or people who were already drunk at the after-party. The staff were like “I was watching you just now” (laughs).
