WSBK Misano Superpole race: Petrucci causes cancellation, Bautista wins!

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Ducati factory rider Alvaro Bautista was declared the winner in the sprint race of the Superbike World Championship in Misano (Italy). The 10-lap Superpole race had to be stopped after a collision between Danilo Petrucci (Barni-Ducati) and Iker Lecuona (Honda). Before the stoppage, Alvaro Bautista and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Yamaha) dueled for victory (result based on the last measured sector).

Alvaro Bautista started the sprint race from pole and shared the first row with Toprak Razgatlioglu and Michael Rinaldi (Ducati). Bautista took the lead after the start, but was attacked by Razgatlioglu after just a few corners.

Dominique Aegerter (GRT-Yamaha) crashed in the second corner after contact with Danilo Petrucci. GRT teammate Remy Gardner was unable to avoid him and crashed into Aegerter. Gardner was shaken wildly in the gravel trap.

Gardner remained lying in the gravel trap after the collision and later had to be taken to the medical center, Aegerter sprinted to his Yamaha and tried to continue the race. Petrucci received a long lap penalty for the maneuver during the race.

The race continued after the crash. Razgatlioglu and Bautista were dueling at the front. Behind them there was a duel between Michael Rinaldi and Ducati brand colleague Axel Bassani. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) was in fifth position.

Toprak Razgatlioglu

On lap three, Bautista passed Razgatlioglu. One lap later, Razgatlioglu launched a new attack at turn 4 and took the lead. Razgatlioglu risked a lot to stay in front. Bautista used the top speed advantage of his Ducati and overtook him again with four laps to go.

Danilo Petrucci clears Iker Lecuona in turn 8

On the same lap, there was a collision between Danilo Petrucci and Iker Lecuona. The two former MotoGP riders collided in turn 8. Petrucci had already crashed in turn 8 on Saturday. The race was stopped. Petrucci and Lecuona had to be taken to the medical center. Both hit the asphalt hard.

Update (12:02 pm): After an initial examination, Iker Lecuona was deemed unfit and will miss the second main race. The first checks at the medical center revealed injuries to his hip and ankle.

Impressive: Alvaro Bautista celebrates 13th win of the season

The race was not restarted. The result was defined based on the status of the last sector measurement. Alvaro Bautista was lucky to overtake Toprak Razgatlioglu in time. The world championship leader thus continued his winning streak. In the 14th race, Bautista celebrated his 13th victory of the season.

The cancellation deprived Razgatlioglu of a final chance to attack. After the race, the Turk was disappointed and angrily hit the tank of his Yamaha. And Michael Rinaldi was not completely satisfied with third place either.

Fourth place went to Axel Bassani, who beat Jonathan Rea. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki), Andrea Locatelli (Yamaha), Xavi Vierge (Honda) and Garrett Gerloff (BMW) finished in sixth to ninth positions and collected points.

Scott Redding

Philipp Öttl (GoEleven-Ducati) came away empty-handed in tenth place. The two BMW factory riders Scott Redding in P11 and Tom Sykes in P20 also failed to score any points.

The second main race of the Superbike World Championship in Misano will start at 2:00 p.m. (TV overview).
