With these two new smartphones, Xiaomi shows what the Chinese company can really do

Referreport

As expected, Xiaomi has introduced two new folding phones, the Mix Flip and Mix Fold 4, which do a lot better than the recently unveiled devices from Samsung. The Chinese company brings out more, particularly technically and visually. However, an important question still remains open.

Xiaomi Mix Flip introduced

Xiaomi seems to introduce a new cell phone every week. It is therefore particularly rare that the Chinese company actually shows something completely new. That’s exactly the case with the Mix Flip. There has never been a folding phone from Xiaomi. The first generation does a lot better than Samsung, which has been offering such devices for many years.

You can watch the Xiaomi Mix Flip in the video:

The Xiaomi Mix Flip is equipped with a huge external display that works at 120 Hz, is up to 3,000 nits bright and almost allows real multitasking. The company only uses part of the screen for the apps, while widgets can be displayed under the cameras. This means the space is used perfectly. Technically, Xiaomi doesn’t have to hide. There is the latest one Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, up to 16GB RAM and a maximum of 1TB internal storage. Samsung doesn’t even offer configurations like this. That ends with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage.

As with every high-end cell phone, Xiaomi relies on a Leica camera. Two 50 MP sensors are used in the Mix Flip. A 32 MP selfie camera is integrated at the front. The highlight is this 4,780mAh batterywho then too can be charged quickly with up to 67 watts. Xiaomi is making a compromise here because there is no wireless charging function. This was omitted in order to be able to accommodate a larger battery. Samsung has installed a 4,000 mAh battery with 25 watt charging function in the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Charging there also works wirelessly. The folding cell phone from Xiaomi also does not have an IP certification. Samsung also has a clear advantage here.

In terms of price, Xiaomi is doing very well in China. The Mix Flip only costs 5,999 yuan, which is equivalent to around 760 euros. The market launch is set for July 23, 2024.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 presented

The Mix Fold, on the other hand, has been in Xiaomi’s portfolio for several years and has been visually and technically updated. There is also the latest hardware here with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, up to 16 GB of RAM and a maximum of 1 TB of internal storage. The Displays are up to 3,000 nits brightLeica cameras are used and the battery measures 5,100 mAh. This can be charged via cable with 67 watts and wirelessly with 50 watts. There was room for the wireless charging function here and an IPX8 rating was even implemented. This makes the cell phone waterproof. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 costs significantly more at 8,999 yuan. That’s the equivalent of around 1,140 euros.

For me, the Xiaomi Mix Flip is a real statement to Samsung. It looks better, can do more on the external display and offers a larger battery. The big question will be when the cell phone will come to Europe and what it will cost here. The more time Xiaomi takes, the more difficult it will be in this country because the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, like its predecessors, will experience a rapid price drop.
