The popular editing program “Windows Movie Maker” is no longer available in Windows 11 and 10. We’ll show you here how you can still install the program.
The “Windows Movie Maker” is no longer included in Windows 11 and 10. Instead, a more modern alternative called “Video Editor” is preinstalled. But you can also download and install the well-known “Movie Maker”. We tried this with Windows 11 and 10 and it works.

Download and install “Movie Maker” for Windows 11 or 10
- Download the “Windows Essentials 2012” program package, which includes the “Windows Movie Maker“contains. To do this, search the Internet for the file “wlsetup3528-all.exe“.
- After downloading, double click on the file “wlsetup3528-all.exe“.
- You may be asked to configure the runtime environment beforehand..NET Framework 3.5“ to download. Then click on the corresponding button in the assistant.
- Then put the check mark in front of the entry “Windows Live Photo Gallery and Movie Maker” and remove all others if you don’t need them and click on the button “Install“.
- When the installation is complete, confirm with the button “Ready“.
- Open the start menu and type “Movie Maker“ to quickly find and start the program.
- Accept the contract, if you agree, with the button “Assume“.
- Now the “Windows Movie Maker” starts in Windows 10.

Windows Movie Maker: “Installer could not be set up” error (0x8104000d)
If you try to install “Windows Movie Maker” with an online installer, you will see the following error. This is because Microsoft no longer offers “Windows Movie Maker” for download via its own servers. Instead, download the offline installer of “Windows Essentials 2012”, whose file names we have mentioned above. This means the installation works.
Alternative to “Movie Maker”
Before you install the “Windows Movie Maker”, you can also use the pre-installed program “Video editor“Try it in Windows 11 or 10. It has similar features and is more modern.
- Open the start menu and type “Video editor“ (with a hyphen). Click on the program entry to start the tool.
- Click on “ aboveNew video“>”New video project“.
- Now you see the usual sectional view.
- Drag your videos and editing materials into the “Project library“ in order to be able to use them in the video.
