A British citizen Sunak can become the Prime Minister of England and an American Kamal can become the Vice President of the United States, because they are both citizens of that country.

When Rishi Sunak became the Prime Minister in England, Kamala Harris became the Vice President of the United States and now running for the Presidency, we see in India – different social media and many Indian citizens – reacting to these events as if an Indian person had become the Prime Minister of England or the Vice President of the United States.

When any person of Indian origin gets a name – be it a Nobel Prize or a big IT company or in politics – we feel as if an Indian has achieved it. All of them are certainly respectable persons and deserve to be congratulated by all for their achievements.

But we must remember that their earlier generations left India / Indian citizenship and settled abroad and became citizens of that country / by birth. So a British citizen Sunak can become the Prime Minister of England and an American Kamal can become the Vice President of the United States, because he is a citizen of that country. Not because they are of Indian descent.

Their hard work, experience, the trust felt by the people of that country for their work are the reasons behind them getting those positions. They are also facing the problems that other politicians face.

The reason for bringing this up is two newspaper articles:

1. In Pune Kasba Constituency is Brahmin dominated so a person from Brahmin community should be represented in this place.

2. Another news in Pune is 16 percent Christian community in Vadgaon Sheri Constituency, so a Christian candidate should be given from this constituency.

In the case of Kasbya, it is said that ‘since the BJP and Shiv Sena Shinde factions are campaigning for Hindutva, they should field at least 30 Brahmin candidates across the state in the assembly elections’.

Is Hindutva propaganda only representation of Brahmins? Aren’t non-Brahmins Hindus? If there are, then why only Brahmins are represented?

And a letter demanding such has been published by the Brahmin organization.

Does this organization represent all Brahmins (including sub-castes of Brahmins) if not India, not Maharashtra but at least in Pune?

People of other castes and religions live in those constituencies, they also have problems, expectations from political representatives. What should those people do?

When candidates say ‘give me ticket’ because they belong to a particular caste, they forget that there are other caste-religion voters in their constituency and their vote is also important to win.

Can’t others solve the problems in my constituency except the candidate of my caste-religion?

So far, if the problems of that constituency have not been resolved despite the political representatives of the same caste-religion, then how correct is it to say that candidates should be nominated only because of the same caste-religion?

We should ask for representatives who will solve our social and economic problems, maintain peace, implement various important development works in time, guide the youth. Be it any caste-religion.

Along with caste-religion, leaders of all parties are seen talking about women candidates at a very low level in their speeches. Be it Trump in America or we have Sanjay Raut or Vasant Deshmukh in Maharashtra. While asking for candidates in their respective constituencies in the elections, it would be appropriate for citizens to demand decent, moderate candidates. A king like Sri Rama is revered by us, Shivaji Maharaj is respected by us; But in reality political parties field candidates who would put even Duryodhana / Dugraj to shame, but we remain silent. We common citizens should protest about it atleast through newspapers.

I myself have lived in the town for ten years, while being a professor I have also done census work in the town. In the last 40 years, the condition of the village has deteriorated. The situation of Vadgaon Sherry is no different.

So just as Sunak and Kamala have been elected for their work, we should also consider how they work when electing political representatives. Sunak and Kamala would not have been able to get citizenship, let alone election, if narrow islands had been formed in England and America.

It is wrong to conveniently praise Sunak and Harris and ask for a candidate of my own caste, my own religion while asking for a candidate to vote here.

India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. Indian voters are an integral part of democracy through ‘representative elections’. The more conscientious the voters are, the stronger the democracy will be.
