WhatsApp is not only available on mobile phones, there are also programs available for Windows and Mac PCs that allow you to use WhatsApp on your desktop. Users have long wanted to be able to use WhatsApp on their computer to make phone calls or video calls. Now it’s finally possible! GIGA explains how it works.

“WhatsApp Desktop” has a lot of nice features. You can use a decent keyboard for typing and it is also easier to send pictures, videos and documents directly from your PC. Unfortunately, the desktop version of “WhatsApp Web” did not support video telephony or calls over the Internet. But now the feature has finally been released and you can, for example, make calls or even video calls with WhatsApp on your laptop. GIGA shows you how it works.

Of course, making calls via WhatsApp on a computer requires the appropriate equipment. So you need either a laptop with microphone and camera or needs for your PC at least a headsetIf you want to make a video call using WhatsApp Desktop on your computer, you will of course also need a connected webcam.

If everything is working and active, you can start WhatsApp Desktop and call your contacts via the computer’s Internet.

Start WhatsApp phone calls and video calls on your computer:

1. If you haven’t already done so, install WhatsApp Desktop on your PC. Here you can find the version for Windows and macOS.
2. Start the app and connect it to WhatsApp on your smartphone. All you have to do is scan the QR code displayed in WhatsApp with your phone.
3. Well click on one of your contactsto open the chat window.
4. You will now see the contacts on the left, the chat window on the right and above it on the right the two symbols that you are already used to from the app: A Camera and a telephone handset.

5. Now click on the Camera for a video call or on the Telephone handset for a telephone conversation without picture.
6. A small window will then open, informing you about the Conversation setup In the case of a video call, you see what your camera would show your conversation partner.

7. As soon as the connection is established, you will either see the person you are talking to or a small connection window.
8. For the hang up just click on the red telephone receiver.

These phone calls via WhatsApp on the computer are encrypted from end to end, as you are used to on your smartphone. Currently, the feature is only available for conversations between two peoplebut it is to be expanded so that group calls are also possible – in voice and video.

Making calls via WhatsApp Web?

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to make phone calls using WhatsApp Web in the browser. It is also not known whether an extension of the “browser WhatsApp” is planned in this regard. So if you were hoping to be able to talk to your family on the go via your PC without installing anything, we have to disappoint you. But of course you can just keep using your smartphone in this situation.

It is probably just too complicated to offer these functions on all systems and in all browsers. After all, different browsers handle access permissions for microphones and cameras differently. For this reason, proprietary programs such as Skype have always worked better on the PC than via the browser.
