Vinesh Phogat appeals against Paris Olympic disqualification with CAS: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat entered the finals of the women’s 50 kg wrestling competition at the Olympics. But before the final match, her weight gained 100 grams more than 50 kg. So she was disqualified from the competition. Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against this. Vinesh has demanded a silver medal from the Sports Olympics. CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) will hear Vinesh’s petition today. From India, senior lawyer Harish Salve will represent Vinesh and the Indian Olympic Committee. The hearing in this matter will be held at 1.30 pm Indian time. Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for an Olympic final with a 5–0 victory in the semifinals, but was unable to compete in the finals due to disqualification action.
The sports court was going to hear the matter on Thursday (August 8). Also, the court had given four options of lawyers to Vinesh to represent her side. These included Joel Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habine Estelle Kim and Charles Emson. These are all CAS free advocates for the Paris Olympics. But the Indian Olympic Committee had sought time to appoint Indian lawyers to present its case. The hearing was then adjourned for a day. CAS will hear the matter today at 1.30 pm (India time). The Indian Olympic Committee has appointed Harish Salve in this matter and he will represent Vinesh before the CAS. Harish Salve will be available for this hearing virtually.
What is Vinesh’s demand?
Vinesh Phogat has now appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport to give her a joint silver medal. If CAS decides in Vinesh’s favour, the International Olympic Committee will have to award Vinesh a joint silver medal. Vinesh Phogat had earlier demanded CAS to play the final match. But on calls to include her in the final, CAS said they could not stop the final, after which Phogat demanded a joint silver medal. Now CAS has announced the final verdict on this case on Thursday, August 8.
