Vice President Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, expressed her opposition to Nippon Steel’s plan to acquire U.S. Steel, a major steelmaker.
Vice President Harris:
President Biden said that U.S. Steel is a historic American company and maintaining a strong American steel company is essential to our country. I agree with President Biden: U.S. Steel should be American owned and American operated.
Vice President Harris and President Biden held a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where U.S. Steel is headquartered, and expressed their opposition to Nippon Steel’s plan to acquire U.S. Steel.
“I will always stand with American steelworkers and all American workers,” Harris said.
Regarding the acquisition plan, former Republican President Trump has also expressed his opposition to the acquisition, saying, “US Steel is the best American company and we must not allow a Japanese company to acquire it.”
The United Steelworkers union, to which U.S. Steel employees belong, opposes the takeover, so both candidates have shown a stance of siding with the union in an effort to gain support from workers.
