Suspicion of using influencers on US social media
The U.S. Treasury Department decided on the 4th (local time) to sanction the head of news at the Russian state-run broadcaster RT and others. This is because they attempted to influence the U.S. presidential election in November. Those subject to sanctions are banned from visiting the U.S. and have their assets in the U.S. frozen.
The Finance Ministry said it had added 10 individuals and two entities to the new sanctions list, including RT’s news director Margarita Simonovna Simonyan and deputy news director Elizaveta Yuryevna Brodskaia.
They are accused of using influencers on social media in the United States to influence the U.S. presidential election on the 11th and create pro-Russian public opinion. The U.S. influencers were unaware that they were being used for Russian operations, the Treasury Department explained.
Separately, the FBI has seized 32 Internet domains used for political manipulation in the United States, including attempts to discredit U.S. aid to Ukraine.
