GAZA – Inhabitant Gaza continue to be cornered into an increasingly narrow area due to attacks Israel. Sam Rose, senior deputy field director for the United Nations (UN) agency for Palestine refugees or Unrwa which is located in Deir al-Balah.
He warned that both UN staff and Palestinian civilians were being pushed further into unsafe areas. “The humanitarian zone declared by Israel has shrunk. It is now about 11% of the entire Gaza Strip,” he told reporters in New York via video link.
“This is not just 11% of the land that is habitable, suitable for services, suitable for life. These are sand dunes, these are dense areas, where people are living crammed together, doing whatever they can to survive,” he said.
“It is in these circumstances that polio has recently re-emerged in Gaza, with a small number of cases. The disease can spread very quickly,” he added.
“Children are malnourished. A devastated health care sector. Water and sanitation are very poor. People are living in the middle of garbage, in the middle of lakes of sewage. They are stressed, anxious, their immune systems are suppressed,” he concluded.
The UN said the new order issued on Sunday (8/25/2024) covering one block in the south of the city affected 15 UN and NGO sites, as well as four UN warehouses.
