United Nations Special Rapporteur: Israel has violated international law

Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur, said on Thursday, January 18 (Jadi 28) that Israel has violated international laws by razing Gaza to the ground and killing thousands of Palestinians.

Meanwhile, South Africa has also accused Israel of genocide in the International Court of Justice.

The Italian Albanian, who is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories, said at a press conference in Spain that Israel has done things that are highly illegal.

He added: “While Israel has the right to defend itself, international humanitarian law must be respected in order to protect people who are not actively involved in the war. (Including) civilians, prisoners of war and the sick. And the injured.”

The United Nations Special Rapporteur said that there should be a separation between the fighters and the civilians, and civilians should not be harmed during military operations. And he said: “Instead, during the 100 days of continuous bombardment – in the first two weeks, the use of 6,000 bombs per week, 2,000-pound (907 kg) bombs will be used in very crowded areas.”

And he added that the majority of hospitals were disabled, bombed, blocked or taken over by the Israeli army, “People are dying not because of the bombing but because of the lack of adequate infrastructure to treat their wounds.”

Albanese added: “The number of children who have one or two limbs amputated every day is shocking. During the first two months of this war, 1,000 children were amputated without the use of anesthetics. This is monstrous.”

Israeli officials say that Hamas militants attacked the country on October 7 and killed 1,140 people, most of whom were civilians.

Health authorities in Gaza have said that at least 24,620 people have been killed during Israel’s retaliatory attacks, of which 70 are women, children and the elderly.

Special Rapporteurs are not United Nations employees, but permanent experts who are nominated by the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Francesca Albanese said that she condemns the violence of Hamas, but nothing can justify what Israel has done.

But Israel insists that the military response was self-defense and it has taken measures to prevent civilian casualties.
