A Seoul Transportation Corporation labor union worker who had been fired for neglect of work and was about to be reinstated due to an unfair dismissal decision died of cerebral hemorrhage. It is known that this worker suffered greatly after being fired.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, Public Transport Workers’ Union, and Seoul Transportation Corporation union announced on the 2nd, “Among the 32 people who were dismissed as unfair, Mr. Park, who served as the head of the union’s technical headquarters, died around 10:30 a.m. that day.” Mr. Park collapsed due to cerebral hemorrhage on his way home on the 23rd of last month and died after struggling with the disease.
Previously, the Seoul Transportation Corporation fired 19 union officials in May, saying that 32 union executives, including Mr. Park, had committed unauthorized absences by not working at the designated time and place, as a result of an investigation into the ‘working hour exemption system’ (time-off) in December of last year. Each person was dismissed from office. In response, the union refuted that it was not an unauthorized absence, but union work, and that the construction company’s sudden dismissal after not raising the issue since 2010 when time-off was implemented was oppression of the union. Time-off is a system that recognizes working hours and pays wages only for union work, such as labor-management negotiations.
The union filed an application for relief from unfair dismissal and unfair labor practices, and last month, the Seoul Regional Labor Relations Commission ruled that the dismissal was unfair, saying, “The grounds for disciplinary action are acknowledged, but the dismissal is excessive.” Accordingly, 26 people, including Mr. Park, were ordered to be reinstated on the 26th of last month.
The union said, “The deceased, who was responsible for providing relief for unfair dismissals, suffered symptoms of anxiety and depression after being fired, and was especially traumatized by the dismissal of a co-worker,” and added, “It was an unfortunate accident caused by the unreasonable and harsh suppression of the union and planned layoffs by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Corporation.” criticized. Accordingly, the union added that it will continue its struggle indefinitely by forming a funeral countermeasures committee and demanding an apology from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Transportation Corporation and recognition of Mr. Park, who died in the line of duty.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the corporation dissatisfied with the Gino Committee’s decision and submitted an application for retrial to the National Labor Relations Commission.
