Referreport
RB Leipzig goes into the international break with plenty of self-confidence. Coach Marco Rose’s team is still unbeaten in the Bundesliga and has the best defense so far, conceding just two goals. Managing director Marcel Schäfer has had an “extremely good feeling” over the past few days, as he reported after the 1-0 (0-0) win at 1. FC Heidenheim. The 40-year-old did not call for an attack on the championship, but he did once again underline the club’s ambitions.
“Of course” RB wants to “play for the title” and “get the most out of every single player, but also out of our team and our club,” explained Schäfer. “It is not yet possible to fully assess what the maximum is.” Many factors would play a role: whether the team gets into a flow, whether it is spared from major injuries or how quickly the new additions fully integrate.
Competitors’ mistakes were used
Hard-fought successes like the one in Heidenheim are important, said winning goal scorer Lois Openda. It was still early in the season, said the Belgian. But he already saw a little progress. “Last season we lost some stupid points,” he said – especially when direct competitors also made mistakes. This time the title contenders Bayer Leverkusen (2:2 against Kiel) and Borussia Dortmund (1:2 at Union Berlin) dropped points – and RB was there.
The victory on the Ostalb on Sunday was deserved, said Schäfer. Nevertheless, there were “phases in this game that we have to solve better”. RB still has a “long way” to go, said the ex-professional. After the international break, we continue with an away game at FSV Mainz 05 on October 19th.
