Today, Monday, the 4th of March (14th of August), Ukraine requested the Western countries to give the confiscated assets of Russia to the country so that it can be used in the process of reconstruction.
Western countries have frozen Russia’s assets following the country’s military attack on Ukraine, and now the demands for the creation of a fund for Ukraine and the use of billions of dollars from Russia’s bank accounts and other assets frozen by Moscow through the West have increased.
Denis Shmegal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, said in a press conference: “The confiscation of Russian assets should become a reliable source of support for our state and finance its revival.”
Ukraine has warned that it will need more financial and military aid.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine asked the Western countries to act quickly before the elections and changes in the political ranks, if they might disrupt the search in this regard.
This is when US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last week that there is a “strong moral case” for confiscating Russian assets and handing them over to Ukraine.
He asked the member countries of the G7 to evaluate the options in this regard.
Russia called this proposal destructive, condemned it and promised to take retaliatory measures if the seized assets of this country are given to Ukraine.
