U.S. State Department condemns China for “detaining thousands to more than 10,000” over Uighur oppression in religious freedom report

The U.S. State Department released a report on global religious freedom, condemning China for its continued repression of Muslim Uighurs.

The 2023 Global Religious Freedom Report released by the U.S. State Department on the 26th pointed out that China continues to oppress ethnic minorities, including the Muslim Uighurs, on the basis of their religion.

In 2023, they estimated that anywhere from several thousand to more than 10,000 people were housed in the facilities.

A senior State Department official in charge of preparing the report strongly condemned the Chinese government, saying, “The Chinese government continues to commit crimes against humanity and genocide – the destruction of ethnic groups – against ethnic and religious minorities.”

Secretary of State Blinken also expressed concern that anti-Semitism and Islamophobia have been spreading rapidly around the world, including in the United States, since the attacks on Israel by the Islamic organization Hamas in October last year.
