Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon of the year, made landfall in the Philippines, causing floods and landslides, killing 11 people.
According to AFP on the 2nd (local time), Philippine disaster authorities announced that at least 11 people died due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains across the country that day.
In Antipolo, east of the capital Manila, three people, including a pregnant woman, died in a landslide that day. In addition, four people were found dead after being swept away by flooding caused by rain that fell overnight.
In Naga City, in the central Bicol region, a man died from electrocution and an eight-month-old girl drowned.
A landslide also struck the popular tourist destination of Cebu, killing two people and burying five homes. The Philippine government ordered the closure of all schools in the capital region and suspended public services.
Manila Airport also announced that some 29 domestic flights operated by Philippine Airlines and Cebu Air were canceled due to bad weather. Ferry operations in the eastern and central regions were also suspended due to the typhoon.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric Administration, as of 9 a.m. today, Yagi recorded a maximum sustained wind speed of 75 km/h at its central pressure and a maximum sustained wind speed of 90 km/h.
Yagi is expected to make landfall in Isabela, northern Luzon, or Cagayan sometime this afternoon or overnight, and is expected to pass through or make landfall in Taiwan and Hong Kong around the 5th or 6th.
