On the 4th, the US Department of Justice announced that it had indicted two Russian state media officials for spreading false information in an attempt to influence the November presidential election.
Attorney General Garland:
We will not tolerate attempts by authoritarian regimes to exploit our democratic political system.
Attorney General Garland announced at a press conference that the Russian state-run media outlet RT had indicted two employees for spreading propaganda and disinformation and interfering in the presidential election.
Over the past year, the two are accused of secretly providing around 1.4 billion yen to social media content production companies to create thousands of videos containing pro-Russian propaganda and disinformation in an attempt to manipulate public opinion.
The agency also said it had seized several internet domains that were being used to conduct election interference activities funded by the Russian government and others.
The US Treasury Department also announced that it had added 10 other people, including the editor-in-chief of RT, and two other organizations to its sanctions list.
Garland said he plans to address “increasing aggressive activity from Iran” in addition to Russia.
