(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – Since the VW Group published its sales figures for 2023 (9.24 million units), we have been waiting for the corresponding data from Toyota. Now the figures are available. And the Japanese giant has managed to beat its German rival. With the record number of 11,233,039 vehicles (+7.2% compared to the previous year), Toyota is the world’s largest car company for the fourth year in a row.

A closer look at the numbers shows that the Toyota and Lexus brands delivered 10,307,395 cars in 2023, an increase of 7.7% year-on-year and a new record. The subsidiary Daihatsu also reported solid results, with deliveries up 3.2% to 790,441 units. The last 12 months were not very encouraging for the Hino division, which is responsible for commercial vehicles, as sales fell 9.8% to 135,203 units.
Sales outside Japan also reached an all-time high last year, when Toyota and its subsidiaries delivered 8,928,230 cars, up 4.1% from the previous year. The majority of sales came from the main brands Toyota and Lexus, which recorded 8,634,425 vehicles, up 4.3% from 2022, setting another record. The largest single market was the United States, with 2,617,033 cars, up 7% from the previous year.
Lexus also achieved a new sales record in 2023 with 824,258 vehicles delivered – a whopping increase of 132% compared to 2022. North America was by far the most important region with 355,606 units (+124%), followed by Asia with 236,587 units (+113%) and the home market of Japan with 94,647 units (+229%).
And the other group competitors? The Hyundai Group is in third place with 7.32 million units (+6.7%). General Motors has not yet published its global sales figures for 2023, but in 2022 the US giant was able to sell 5.93 million cars. Which would be enough for fourth place. Stellantis will communicate the data for the year that has just ended on February 15. In 2022 it was 5.84 million vehicles. It is followed by the Nissan Group, which was able to sell 3.23 million cars in the past 12 months (+4.6%).
