Japanese yakitori chain Torikizoku has opened its first store in Korea. It will be interesting to see if it will be accepted in the Korean market, which is known to be difficult to penetrate.
A crowd of people was gathering at Torikizoku’s first Korean branch, which opened in Seoul on the 28th.
Torikizoku is doing well in Japan, recovering the number of customers that temporarily dropped due to the effects of the new coronavirus, and is looking for new growth overseas.
Eternal Hospitality Group President Tadashi Okura
“We will open 300 stores (in South Korea) in 2029. We would like to open stores here first.”
However, South Korea is said to be the “graveyard for Japanese restaurant chains” and is considered a difficult market to capture.
What was the reaction from the customers on the first day?

“Low price and delicious”
“(Torikizoku) I used to go there often when I went to Japan. Considering the cost performance, it’s pretty good.”
Torikizoku’s challenge is likely to serve as a test for other food and beverage chains to expand into South Korea.
