The yen began trading in the early hours of the 13th on the Tokyo foreign exchange market after the holidays at around 147 yen to the dollar.
As of 9 a.m., the yen was up 17 sen against the dollar, trading at 147.03-04 yen per dollar. The euro was up 0.3 sen against the yen, trading at 160.79-82 yen per euro.
Rising tensions over the situation in the Middle East raised concerns about the impact on the U.S. economy, leading to selling of the dollar and buying of the yen.
