Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, who are currently on a visit to the UK, visited the University of Oxford on the 28th, where they both previously studied.

At Balliol College, they were welcomed by Chancellor Chris Patten and Head of College Helen Ghosh, and then walked around the college grounds. The Empress was also presented with an honorary doctorate by the university, and the couple attended wearing black hats and red gowns.

At Merton College, Their Majesties planted a cherry tree in the school gardens to mark their return visit.

The Emperor and Empress are scheduled to return to Japan on the 29th (Japan time). (c)AFP
