WASHINGTON – The US Department of Homeland Security said on Friday that the Biden administration would not renew the temporary humanitarian admissions program for US immigrants who arrived in recent years.
530,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela have entered the US by air since October 2022. Two years of grants have been awarded under the ‘parole’ programme, which will expire in the coming weeks. However, many of the immigrants can remain in the country under other programs.
Joe Biden’s administration launched the parole program as a way to allow immigrants to enter legally and reduce illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border. A record number of immigrants have been caught crossing illegally since Biden became president, but immigration has slowed in recent months as new border controls have been put in place.
