Kanpur: Rain and bad weather took half of the match, while India won the other half without giving it to Bangladesh. It was a ‘beaten’ victory for India by challenging the bad weather and Bangladesh who did not try very hard to equalise. India won the second match in Kanpur by seven wickets. India easily surpassed the target of 95 runs set by Bangladesh with the loss of three wickets. With this, India officially won both the Test matches and won the series. Other teams still have dreams of beating India in a Test series at home.
The Tigers of Bangladesh are coming to Indian soil with the excitement and confidence of defeating Pakistan last month. Veterans R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and youngsters Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill slaughtered the Tigers in the first match at Chepauk to lead India to victory. With the Jasprit Bumrah-led pace team at a standstill, Bangladesh had no escape. Huge win by 280 runs.
The second Test match is one of the best examples of how concentration and planning can decide the fate of a match. On the first day, only 35 overs were bowled and the first three days were played in rain and bad weather. Even the rest of the competition starts on the fourth day. With just two days to go, many were predicting that the match would end in a draw. But India seemed to want nothing less than victory. India bowled out Bangladesh for 233 all out in the first innings. Even then a result in the match was a remote possibility. But India and skipper Rohit had other plans. Rohit Sharma hit the first two balls in the second over of the Indian innings and made India’s intentions clear.
Later, Rohit and young player Yashwaswi Jaiswal, who opened the attack, attacked Bangladesh. 51 runs on the Indian scoreboard after three overs! Although India lost Rohat in the fourth over, Jaiswal continued to attack and the scoring speed increased with the addition of Shubman Gill. Later Indian wickets fell at intervals but all the batsmen took up India’s plan to score more runs in less time. Jaiswal scored 72 runs and Gill got out with 39 runs, but Virat and Rahul in the middle order took the lead for India following the same attacking style.
In this innings, India acquired all the records of the team’s fastest scores of 50, 100, 150, 200 in a Test match. Finally, with a lead of 52 runs, Neelpada declared the innings at 285 runs. Rahul scored 68 runs and Virat scored 47 runs. India’s strategy was to throw Bangladesh and grab the match.
In the second innings, the Indian bowlers bowled out Bangladesh for 146 runs. The Tigers were unable to show an upper hand even on a single point in front of India who played with determination. Jasprit Bumrah for India, R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each. Opening batsman Shadman Islam stopped Bangladesh who resumed batting on the last day from 26 down. The player who scored 50 runs is the top scorer of the team. With the Indian bowlers taking wickets at the right times, it was impossible for Bangladesh to come back. It was the resistance of the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim who joined the tail end and took Bangladesh to 140. Rahim scored 37 runs off 63 balls.
The victory target of 95 runs that was ahead of Rohit and his team was the rest of the courage and mentality shown by India as victory and defeat were impossible in the match.
. In the opening, Jaiswal scored 51 runs off 45 balls and became India’s highest run-scorer in the second innings as well. Virat Kohli scored 29 runs not out. Skipper Rohit Sharma (8), Shubman Gill (6) and Jaiswal are the batsmen out. Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten with four runs.
