“Titanic” whirlwind and its negative effects
Just like 1997, 1998 is full of Leonardo DiCaprio. The distribution revenue of “Titanic” (1997) surpassed “Princess Momonoke” (1997) and broke the all-time box office revenue list in Japan. In the first half of the year, “Titanic” took the world by storm.
At the height of his popularity, DiCaprio faces a dilemma as an actor. Although he was offered all kinds of roles, people expected him to play a character similar to Jack Dawson in Titanic.
However, after that, he continued to explore and successfully transitioned into an adult actor in “Gangs of New York” (2002). This led to him continuing to collaborate with master director Martin Scorsese and expanding the range of his roles.

One of the victims of the Leo whirlwind was Kate Winslet, who co-starred in Titanic. Winslet, who played Rose, who falls in love with Jack in the film, became the subject of jealousy, and criticism also extended to her body shape. As a result of the so-called “two people in the door” controversy*, with the development of the Internet, the theory that “If Rose had been thinner, Jack would have survived” has become more popular.
Winslet, who recently starred in a James Cameron film again in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), said, “It was bullying, almost abuse.”
*[Spoiler]At the end of the story, the two are thrown into the sea, but Rose catches a wooden door that is falling and Jack sinks into the sea.
