Washington: Donald Trump has reportedly asked Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the Gaza war by the time he wins the US election and takes office as president. The Times of Israel released the news citing people close to Trump and Netanyahu. Both their offices were not ready to respond to the issue.
Trump publicly announced that he told Netanyahu that he wanted Israel to win the war as soon as possible.
Netanyahu announced that he would take control of security in Gaza after the war. The IDF also revealed that it would establish a buffer zone inside Gaza to regularly check whether Hamas was regrouping. Meanwhile, Netanyahu is not ready to accept the deal to end the war as soon as the 101 hostages are handed over. This means that Netanyahu is not ready to end the war immediately.
Trump warned at the Republican National Convention in July that if Hamas did not release the hostages before taking office, there would be a heavy price to pay. Trump and Netanyahu have had several meetings since July. Trump said last week that the Prime Minister of Israel called him two days ago.
Two senior Israeli officials shared with The Times of Israel their concern over Trump’s constant calls to Netanyahu to demand an immediate end to the Gaza war. The concern is that if Trump is re-elected president in November and is unable to end the war before taking office in January, it could damage Israel’s good relationship with the US. One of the officials also pointed out that internal politics is an obstacle to ending the war quickly.
