What is the reason for the gray carpet?

Movie events are usually accompanied by endless red carpets, but a gray rug covered the aisles of the Beverly Hilton where the 80th Golden Globe Awards were held. Is this a mood of self-restraint due to the constant bashing? I thought so, but apparently the management said, “It’s innovative, isn’t it?”
