The 41st exhibition of the “Sankei Kanagawa 100 Selected Calligraphy Exhibition” (organized by Sankei Shimbun, supported by the prefecture, Yokohama City, Kawasaki City, etc.), in which calligraphers active in Kanagawa Prefecture exhibit works regardless of genre or school, was held on the 28th. It started at “Golden Gallery” and “Gallery Morigensai” on the third floor of Pio City in front of JR Sakuragicho Station (Naka Ward, Yokohama City).
On display at the venue are the works of 101 calligraphers, including Chinese poems in unique calligraphy, kana written in flowing lines, modern poetry, and inscriptions. There were many ambitious works, such as “Kaze” written by Kazusa Saito, the chief advisor of the 21st Century International Book Association, and many people came to see them from the morning onwards, admiring the works.
Additionally, the “tsugi” written by Sumio Katayama, the former vice president of the association, who passed away in January of this year, is displayed as his last ink. In addition, there will be a special exhibition of telegrams and signals written by Heihachiro Togo, known as the commander-in-chief of the combined fleet of the former Japanese Navy during the Russo-Japanese War. It is a telegram announcing the discovery of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, and is known for expressing its determination to face a decisive battle. It includes the words “Today’s weather is clear and sunny, but the waves are high” at the end.
A 25-year-old woman from Yokohama who visited with a friend said, “I came here because I’m interested in stationery and paper, but I really enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of paper being used and the elaborate designs.I have no experience with calligraphy. However, when I looked at the way the brush was placed and the flowing lines, I realized how important handwriting is.I was excited by all of the works.”
