On the 8th, the Japan Sumo Association published the medical certificate of Yokozuna Terunofuji, who has been absent from the first day of the Autumn Tournament, stating that “he is expected to take three weeks off to receive treatment due to diabetes and osteoarthritis in both knees.” He injured his left knee at the end of the summer tour in August. This is the first time he has been absent from the first day of a tournament following a victory, and his master, Isegawa Oyakata (former Yokozuna Asahifuji), has indicated that he plans to aim for Terunofuji to return on the Autumn Tour after the tournament.

Former ozeki and juryo wrestler Asanoyama, who is also absent, was given a medical certificate stating that he has “injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.” He injured it in the Nagoya tournament in July and underwent ligament reconstruction surgery. Juryo wrestler Myogiryu was given a medical certificate stating that he has “osteoarthritis in his left knee.”
