Why we celebrate Teachers Day : On September 5 Dr. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, ‘Teacher’s Day’ is celebrated with enthusiasm across the country. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888. But, you know? Why is Teacher’s Day celebrated on Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary? There is a unique story behind it. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born in a poor Tamil Brahmin family. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan completed his entire education through scholarships. He completed his post-graduate studies in philosophy and subsequently published the book ‘Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore’ in 1918. He was a very bright student in his school life. At the same time, he also worked as a teacher.

He was the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936 and succeeded Madan Mohan Malaviya as the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He represented India in the United Nations for eight years from 1931 to 1939. From 1949 to 1952, the Government of India appointed him as the Ambassador of India to Russia. He returned to India in 1952 and then held the post of Vice President of the country for a period of 10 years from 1952 to 1962. He became the President of India on 14 May 1962. He was also awarded the highest title ‘Bharat Ratna’.

Why is ‘Teacher’s Day’ celebrated on 5th September?

When he was serving as President, his students came to him and expressed their wish that his birthday be celebrated as a special day. But, Dr. Radhakrishnan requested that 5th September i.e. his birthday be celebrated as ‘Shikshak Day’ to express his gratitude to teachers for their invaluable contribution to the society and since then ‘Shikshak Day’ is celebrated on 5th September every year in India.
He achieved a lot of success in various fields in his life; But he always considered himself a teacher. Teacher’s Day is celebrated to remember them and for students to recognize the importance of teachers in their lives.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Dr. Radhakrishnan once said, “Dr. Radhakrishnan has served our country in various capacities. But, above all, he is a great teacher; From whom we have learned a lot and will continue to learn. A great philosopher, a great teacher and a good person, India is fortunate to have a President like him.”
