Miami Open tennis tournament, March 25, saw world number one and top seed Iga Swiatek of Poland lose 4-6, 2-6 to 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round of the women’s singles.

Swiatek struggled from the start against Alexandrova’s aggressive tennis and lost in straight sets, failing to achieve the “sunshine double” of winning two consecutive matches since the BNP Paribas Open.

“It’s really disappointing because I was hoping to play better in Miami, but they played a great game and were definitely better today,” Swiatek said after the match.

Alexandrova, who has reached the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, will next face fifth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States.

Third seed Coco Gauff of the United States also lost 3-6, 6-1, 2-6 to 23rd seed Caroline Garcia of France, while second seed Aryna Sabalenka also lost in the third round, meaning all three players in the top three are out of the tournament.

Garcia, who beat Naomi Osaka in the third round, will face American Danielle Collins in the quarter-finals.

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan defeated 17th seed Madison Keys of the United States 6-3, 7-5 to set up a quarter-final meeting with eighth seed Maria Sakkari of Greece.

Sakkari advanced after her scheduled opponent, 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya, withdrew before the match due to a right thigh injury.

Victoria Azarenka, the 27th seed, also made it to the quarterfinals. (AFP/Simon EVANS)
