Jan Gyamerah is moving to 1. FC Kaiserslautern with immediate effect. The move comes as a surprise to many FCN fans, as the right-back was a regular player last season and a candidate for the captain’s armband. Reactions are divided.

The news was worth a whole eight lines to 1. FC Nuremberg on Friday (July 26, 2024). Jan Gyamerah is moving to 1. FC Kaiserslautern. For many club fans, the departure of a key player from last season comes as a surprise. The reactions on social networks were accordingly. Many fans reacted with incomprehension, some were even very angry.

The circumstances of the transfer are indeed somewhat unusual. The 29-year-old Gyamerah had missed most of the pre-season training, officially due to persistent back problems. The right-back, who often played as captain in the second half of the season, had only recently returned to the training ground. Despite this, the transfer to FCK and the obligatory medical check there apparently went without a hitch. So was the departure already a done deal?

Surprising Gyamerah departure from FCN: Many fans react with incomprehension

If you believe a report from the “Picture“-Zeitung, they are not so sad at FCN to get Gyamerah off the payroll, as he was considered one of the higher earners in the squad. They also did not seem to be completely convinced of his sporting value. Nevertheless, the transfer – to a league competitor – opens up another gap in the squad that needs to be filled. And that one week before the start of the second division and just a few hours before the highlight of the friendly against Juventus Turin. Unfortunate.

Many FCN fans are therefore reacting with incomprehension to the Gyamerah transfer. “What? (…) I was hoping that he would become captain this season. (…)” writes one user on X. “Is that a bad joke?” asks another under the FCN post about the transfer. “Why?”, “Huh?”, “I don’t understand” and “wtf?” are other short statements from club fans on X. Others are getting more emotional: “I’m broken. All the best Gyambo!” can be read there. The Franconians’ communication has also been criticized under the post. “Pure bullshit from @1_fc_nuernberg for weeks #fcn Wow, what kind of people are these?!?! #chatzi,” writes one user, who obviously thinks the information about Gyamerah’s back injury is a pretext.

Other users apparently have no problem with the move, on the contrary: “Absolutely average player, no loss with this departure,” one can read. There are also some supporters of the transfer on Facebook. “The right decision. He only fought when he felt like it and his defensive performance often left a lot to be desired,” writes a “top fan” of the 1. FC Nuremberg Facebook page, collecting a few likes for his post. But the following comment received even more positive reactions: “(…) a player who was heavily involved in 64 goals conceded and did not take part in the entire preparation is leaving. So what? You shouldn’t stop travelers. (…)”. And: “That’s right, we’re clearing out!” also received a lot of likes on Facebook.

Squad shake-up at FCN: Gyamerah’s departure “no loss”?

But here too there are opposing voices. “I don’t understand… He was one of the good ones in the team!” writes one user. Another commented ironically: “Makes absolute sense. Selling one of the best from last season and thereby strengthening a competitor.” And: “I think he will be sorely missed,” is also what one reads.

FCN fans are divided over this transfer, which was a surprise to many. Some are happy that the squad overhaul, which was also demanded by the fan scene, is being carried out consistently. Others fear that Gyamerah’s departure will weaken the team’s sporting performance. Certainly: The 29-year-old is not a difference-maker like Can Uzun, who moved to Frankfurt. But for the second division, Gyamerah was and is a solid, reliable defender and had a certain standing, not least due to his (substitute) captaincy last season.

At least the fans agree on one thing: Gyamerah needs a replacement. Going into the season with just youngster Jannik Hofmann and veteran Enrico Valentini seems too risky. But perhaps new coach Miroslav Klose will conjure up an internal solution – or the club has already had a replacement on the hook. It will be interesting to see what happens.
