Protesting students in Bangladesh said on Tuesday, August 6 (16 Asad) that they will support Dr. Muhammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, to lead the country’s interim government.

These statements were made by Bangladeshi students a day after Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Kishor, resigned and fled from Kishor. Following Hasina’s escape, the Bangladeshi army will hold Kishor responsible and declare that the interim government will be formed.

Naheed Islam, the main leader of “Students Against Discrimination” said in a video message: “I have decided to create an interim government, if Dr. Muhammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Prize, a famous international award, would be widely accepted as a consultant.” Arshad beh.

General Waqar-ul-Zaman, Bangladesh’s chief of staff, said on Monday in a state television program that Sheikh Hasina had resigned from the presidency of the country and the army would form an interim government.

Yunus, 84, is a beloved economist because he helped lift millions of people out of poverty in Bangladesh through the provision of small loans. But he also faced the hostility of Hasina, because the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and accused her of being “the blood of poor people”.

76-year-old Hasina, who remained in power from 2009 to August 5, 2024, would have been accused of election fraud in the January elections. In recent months, millions of Bangladeshis have been demanding his removal from the presidency.

Asif Mahmood, one of the student leaders, wrote on his Facebook page that “I trust Dr. Yunus.”

Yunus is currently touring Europe. One of the close colleagues of Yunus said on Monday that the Bangladesh Army has not yet asked Dr. Yunus to take over the leadership of the interim government.
