Storm reaches Balearic Islands: Heavy rain on Mallorca

Referreport

The low pressure area that caused the devastating floods in the south and east of Spain on Tuesday has now hit Mallorca with the first heavy showers. In some areas of the popular Balearic island, more than 100 liters per square meter have already fallen, reported the weather portal “MeteoDadesBalears”. At Palma Airport, all flights are delayed by around one to two hours, according to the German website of the airport company Aena.

As a precautionary measure, the Spanish weather service Aemet issued the orange warning level for the entire archipelago, which also includes Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera, for today’s All Saints holiday. The Balearic Islands government advised against all outdoor activities. The second highest warning level, orange, applies to the islands until 8 a.m. on Saturday. It is expected to remain changeable in the following days, although it will probably no longer rain as heavily.

The sun was still shining on Friday morning, and in the morning the first heavy showers appeared in the southwest of Mallorca. Heavy rain began in Palma around 4 p.m. There was thunder and lightning.
