Referreport
The user reviews on Steam are a pretty helpful way to find out more about a game. Unfortunately, there is a lot of nonsense in the reviews.
Memes, baking recipes or users who promise to give themselves fruit where the sun doesn’t shine for every like – Steam reviews tend to be full of less than helpful posts. Valve wants to remedy the situation, in other words, in the use of reviews, not in the fruit.
Steam reviews are actually there for players to write and read reviews, but the review section also contains a lot of posts that don’t contain any information or opinions about the game.
Involuntary test run spotted
On Reddit, a user shared a screenshot of a new filter system for Steam reviews. The new feature only shows you reviews that the system considers helpful and filters out the memes and joke ratings.
Currently, you cannot use the new filter yet, it seems that Valve activated the feature unintentionally. However, some Reddit users were able to “Helpfulness System” test it before it was switched off again.
What users say
They are visibly excited about the new feature. Although some find the memes quite funny, they are also happy about the opportunity to read actually helpful reviews for a game.
By the way: According to the screenshot, the filter can be turned on and off, so you don’t have to miss out on the jokes and pancake recipes if you need them.
How reviews work for competitors
While Steam only distinguishes between positive and negative reviews, GOG and also in the Epic Games Store a differentiated rating system with 1 to 5 stars. Written reviews are generally not possible at Epic Games.
At Microsoft There are also star ratings and written reviews and it seems that PlayStation is currently experimenting with the possibility of allowing players to express their opinion about a game directly in the store using words. You can find out more about this in the following article:
