Tabaluga & Lilli: Musical highlights in Franconia 2025
The musical’s plot takes viewers back in time to when dragons lived. They are the protectors of the world and protect it from the icy cold with the warmth that their fire gave. But as the ice began to consume life itself, Arktos, a fearsome snowman, emerged with a mission to turn the Earth into an icy desert.
Tyrion, the wise old dragon, sees his son Tabaluga as the chosen one who can avert this impending catastrophe. But to counter Arktos’ terrible plans, Tabaluga must discover the True Fire, which alone can destroy the Snowman’s plans. Accompanied by a magician, Tabaluga faces the dangers on his path, meets the spider woman Tarantula and at the same time discovers the beauty and diversity of the world.
Arktos, in an effort to fail Tabaluga’s mission, creates a beguiling apparition named Lilli out of ice, whose job it is to distract Tabaluga from his actual quest. But the encounter with Lilli opens up a new, powerful force to Tabaluga: love.
Premiere over 30 years ago
“Tabaluga & Lilli” is a musical that has been enchanting both children and adults for over 30 years. It is based on an idea by German music icon Peter Maffay. The premiere took place during the 1993/1994 tour. A highlight of these performances was the recording in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle for ZDF in 1994.
The production lasted until 2001 at TheatrO CentrO Oberhausen and attracted a wide audience. The musical’s performances featured a mix of live performance and special effects, creating an imaginative and captivating atmosphere. An album was also released from the successful performance, which captures the special music and emotional moments of the musical. The first live performances included talented artists such as Sonja Herzeg and Peter Maffay in the role of Tabaluga.
Maffay himself not only gave Tabaluga his voice, but also shaped the musical style of the musical. Nino de Angelo and Rufus Beck also contributed to the dazzling variety of characters in the colorful world of Tabaluga & Lilli as Tyrion and the Magician.

With favorite songs like “Nessaja’s Song”
The music of “Tabaluga & Lilli” contains numerous well-known songs that touch the audience’s heart and provide musical accompaniment to the story. They are not only an integral part of the musical, but have also found their way into Peter Maffay’s musical repertoire and have become favorite songs of Maffay fans. The most famous songs include:
- “I feel like you”
- “Nesaya”
- “The Way Home”

Nessaja appeared on Peter Maffay’s concept album “Tabaluga or the Journey to Reason” in 1983 – the first of several Tabaluga albums* of the artist. The song was also released as a single. It is particularly well known because of the live version released in 1994, which Maffay released as a single under the title “I never wanted to be an adult/Nessaja’s song”. That’s why the song is sometimes called “Nessaja’s Song” or after the striking refrain line “I never wanted to be an adult.”
