If you want to read or sing along to the lyrics on Spotify, you have a number of options. We’ll show you here how you can see the lyrics on Spotify – regardless of whether you’re a premium user or use the music streaming service for free.

Spotify function only for premium users

Since the beginning of May 2024, Spotify has locked the song lyrics behind the premium membership. Spotify Free users who use the service without a paid subscription can no longer display the lyrics in the app or in the player. Below we describe the options with a Spotify Premium subscription and how you can display the song lyrics on your device even without a paid subscription.

Show lyrics on smartphone & tablet

Spotify app

1. Opens the Spotify app and starts playback.
2. Tap on the current songto Playback view switch.
3. Swipe downto see the lyrics (if available).
4. If you click on the both diagonal arrows (see picture), the song lyrics will be displayed in full screen.
   

   

SoundHound

If Spotify doesn’t offer many lyrics for your favorite artist, you can also check out the SoundHound app. You can connect it directly to your Spotify account, play music and also display the lyrics. To do this, simply follow these steps:

1. Download the SoundHound app onto your smartphone or tablet.
2. Then tap on the bottom left “Course” and then on the Gear icon (Settings) top right.
3. Press under “Song Playback” next to Spotify on “Connect service”.
4. Finally, tap on the Button “Connect now”.

Now you can access Spotify tracks directly via SoundHound. If available, lyrics will be displayed in the playback view.

Sometimes even reading the lyrics doesn’t help you understand the actual message of the song. This was the case with these songs, for example:

Spotify Player

1. Opens the Spotify Player on the PC and starts playback.
2. In the playback bar below you will find a Microphone iconif the lyrics for the song are available on Spotify.
3. Click on the microphoneto Lyrics view switch.

SpotifyLyrics

If you want to see the lyrics on your PC, you can access the free project “Spotify Lyrics” by “SimonIT” This is available free of charge for Windows, macOS and Linux.

SpotifyLyrics runs in its own window, recognizes the song currently playing in the Spotify player, retrieves the lyrics from the Internet and then shows you the complete lyrics in the program. The current releases for the different operating systems can be found in SimonIT’s GitHub repository.
