[June 14, KOREA WAVE]The South Korean military has begun preparations to establish an institution that will utilize Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in the military sector.
According to military authorities, the Army Logistics Command recently placed an order for research services on “a plan to build an AI military big data fusion center that benchmarks the U.S. Army’s data analysis organizations.” The study is scheduled to run for five months from the date of the contract, with results expected to be available by the end of this year or early next year.
Regarding the background to this research, the Military Logistics Command explained, “While both domestically and internationally we are evolving from an information society to a fusion society along with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the military’s military informationization has grown to focus on simple operational support. We need to establish an organization and promotion strategy for an ‘AI military big data fusion center’ with a new perspective that is linked to data technology.”
The AI Military Big Data Fusion Center that the Army is preparing to establish aims to promote the rapid and efficient management, analysis, and utilization of military data. It is expected to be operated in the following ways: 1) integrating and analyzing data currently scattered across various information systems in one place to derive big data; 2) using AI to develop effective military support policies.
The Army will benchmark the Logistics Data Analysis Center (LDAC), a specialist organization in the U.S. Army’s military data field, to determine the organizations, personnel, and facilities that suit the Army’s situation. LDAC aims to provide logistics-related data and information technology to support high-level “decision-making” processes in the strategic support area.
