According to a VNA reporter in Ottawa, this year’s Hung Kings Commemoration Ceremony attracted over 100 overseas Vietnamese in the eastern provinces of Canada to attend in person and a large number of people in the community representing the Canada-Vietnam Association in other provinces across the federation to attend online. This is also one of the activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada, with the meaning of strengthening solidarity to create a common strength to help people work and live together in the host country and turn to their homeland.
Speaking to VNA reporters, Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Cao Phong said: “The Hung Kings’ death anniversary is a belief of the Vietnamese people. This activity shows gratitude to our ancestors, who built our country. The Hung Kings’ worship also demonstrates solidarity, which has helped our nation overcome many difficulties to achieve great victories like today. On this occasion, we are even more aware of Uncle Ho’s saying: Unity, unity, great unity; Success, success, great success”.
The worship of Hung Kings originates from legends, but reflects a historical reality that is the formation of the Vietnamese ethnic community very early. This activity is a unique feature in the spiritual culture of the Vietnamese people, showing filial piety to ancestors, respect for ancestors, looking back to the origin, looking back to the homeland, contributing a small part to the construction and protection of the Fatherland.
Ms. Julie Nguyen, a member of the Canada-Vietnam Association Toronto branch, shared: “This year, after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, the Embassy’s organization of this event is an opportunity for people to unite more, and at the same time summarize the community situation as well as community work in recent years to build a more united, cohesive and stronger community.”
The spirit of solidarity has in fact created success for the Vietnamese community living on Prince Edward Island as they always receive spiritual and material support from the provincial government. This is the government’s recognition of the contributions of the Vietnamese community here in particular and Canada in general, helping the Vietnamese people to confidently turn towards their homeland.
Mr. Dang Trung Phuoc, President of the Canada-Vietnam Association, said: “The Ancestor’s Death Anniversary event symbolizes a great national spirit because everyone has the same origin and gathers here to share with each other about life, work and look towards the homeland. With the spirit of looking towards the Fatherland, we have cooperated with Hue city to build this place to become more beautiful and progressive.”
Over the past time, the Vietnamese Embassy in Canada has always played a role in connecting all Vietnamese communities across Canada, helping people, regardless of their circumstances, to join hands towards their homeland.
According to Ambassador Pham Cao Phong, the solidarity towards the homeland of the Vietnamese people through the Embassy in the coming time will be demonstrated through specific actions such as the contribution of Vietnamese scientists to the development of the country, exchange and support activities between the Vietnamese people in Canada and the Vietnamese people in the country, restarting the project to teach Vietnamese language to educate the cultural traditions of the homeland, including the Hung King belief.
Dau Vu Minh Thu, representing the young generation of the Canada-Vietnam Association, said: “I am very grateful to be invited by the Embassy to attend this event. The feeling of attending in person is very different from the previous online attendances. I am also very honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Embassy, recognizing my contributions to community activities. Like other young people, I always want to create beautiful images so that Canadian friends have a good impression of Vietnam.”
