Miami Open tennis player Jannik Sinner of Italy, the second seed, defeated third seed Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in the men’s singles semi-finals on March 29 to reach the final.
Sinner displayed his power and skill in the match and is the clear favourite to win on Wednesday when he takes on the winner of either fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany or 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
Sinner, who lost to Medvedev in last year’s final but got his revenge in January’s Australian Open final, was in complete control of the match from the start and the result was never in doubt.
In the first set, he broke his opponent’s first service game to take a 2-0 lead, and then, with Medvedev struggling with his serve, he converted his fourth break point in the fourth game.
Medvedev, looking shaken, finally managed to hold serve in the sixth game, but Sinner took the seventh at love to take the set in just 33 minutes.
The second set played out in a similar fashion, with Sinner winning the first game at love while Medvedev looked dejected as he trailed 1-4.
Sinner, who easily won the match by serving for the match in the end, acknowledged that his opponent’s lackluster play also helped his overwhelming victory, saying, “I felt great today. As always, I feel more comfortable with each win in the tournament. I’m very happy with today’s performance.” He continued, “I don’t think Daniel was in this mood today. He made a lot of mistakes that he doesn’t usually make, and that helped me seize my chances. I expected it to be a tough match.”
Sinner had lost six straight matches to Medvedev since their first meeting, but now he has won five in a row since losing in the Miami Open final last year. (AFP/Simon EVANS)
