[Reporter Dong Baiting/Reporting from Taipei]Shi Chaoyang, the preserver of the traditional performing art “Chegu Formation” in Changhua County, passed away yesterday (1st) at the age of 93. Upon hearing the news, Minister of Culture Li Yuan expressed his condolences and reluctance, and said that the “Car and Drum Formation” is a traditional performing art in Taiwanese folk festivals and a unique intangible cultural asset of Taiwan. Shi Chaoyang has been committed to promoting and inheriting the “Car and Drum Formation” for many years. For laying a solid foundation for the preservation of traditional performing arts, the Ministry of Culture will issue a certificate of commendation in recognition.
Shi Chaoyang was born in Hemei Town, Changhua County in 1932. He began to learn art with his father at the age of 15 and was good at performing “harlequin” roles. In 1983, he began to engage in community construction work and taught the skills of the drum array. In 1988, he established the “Hemeiyagou Talent Car Drum Array” , becoming the fulcrum of local cultural cohesion.
