Refer Report
On the 30th, Chairman Ryu Hee-rim of the Korea Communications Standards Commission did not attend the National Assembly hearing on the ‘suspicion of instigating civil complaints’ and held a briefing on the spread of illegal synthetic (deepfake) sexual crime material at the same time. It is said that they received a promise from Telegram to actively respond, but in fact, Chairman Ryu only read the prepared opening statement in 4 minutes and left without taking any questions from reporters.
Chairman Ryu held a briefing at the Vigilance Committee in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul at 10 am on the 30th and said that Telegram, at its first face-to-face meeting on the 27th and 28th, said, “We will cooperate in various ways not only on deepfake sex crime videos, but also on illegal information such as pornography, prostitution, drugs, and gambling.” “I promised,” he said. The National Security Commission announced Chairman Ryu’s emergency briefing schedule to reporters after 9 o’clock the night before. This is why there is criticism that the opposition party held an emergency briefing as a ‘trick’ to avoid the morning hearing at which Chairman Ryu was requested to attend.
After finishing his opening remarks, Chairman Ryu responded to the reporters’ request to ‘answer the reporters’ questions and then leave’, saying, “I have other schedules… “After answering, he left the briefing room. In a situation where controversy is growing, with employees of the National Audit Commission recently disclosing their identities and filing an internal complaint about Chairman Ryu’s suspicion of ‘inciting civil complaints’, they refused to ask the question itself.
Previously, Chairman Ryu announced in a statement on the 25th that he would not appear at the hearing on the ‘suspicion of instigating civil complaints’ being held led by the opposition party. He cited the reasons for his non-attendance as being that the hearing would result in unfair interference in the police investigation and that he was accused of violating the Conflict of Interest Prevention Act by the Democratic Party of Korea.
