Dhaka: The Chief Justice resigned following the ultimatum of student protesters in Bangladesh. The protesters had surrounded the Supreme Court and threatened to attack the residences of the Supreme Court judges and the Chief Justice if they did not resign.

The Daily Star reported that Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan decided to resign after this. The Chief Justice told the media that he decided to step down keeping in mind the safety of judges of the Supreme Court and lower courts across the country. He said he would send the resignation letter to President Muhammad Shahabuddin by Saturday evening.

A new protest started in Bangladesh after the news that the Chief Justice Court had called a full court meeting. Hundreds of protesters, including students and lawyers, marched to the Supreme Court and occupied the court premises.

Obaidul Hasan, who was appointed as Chief Justice last year, was a confidant of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hundreds of students surrounded the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Saturday morning demanding the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice.

Sheikh Hasina had resigned and fled following the anti-government protests that had been going on for the past month.
