[Ta Kung Pao News]Reporter Wei Rong reported: “Hong Kong has an indissoluble bond with optical fiber, and Charles Kao, the father of optical fiber, is the pride of Hong Kong.” Shen Ping, deputy director of research and chair professor of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the Southern University of Science and Technology, told Ta Kung Pao reporters yesterday that Hong Kong has good conditions for innovation and technology, and its advantages in cooperation with the mainland are more prominent, especially in terms of application.

The public welfare activity of “Southern Science Lecture Hall” was held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University yesterday. Shen Ping, Chair Professor and Deputy Director of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology, shared his views on the theme of “Frontier Technologies and Applications Based on Advanced Optical Fibers”. In an exclusive interview with Ta Kung Pao, Shen Ping said that after Nobel Prize winner in Physics and former president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Charles Kao invented optical fiber, the industry has changed a lot, especially special optical fiber and its sensing applications have been widely used in many fields, including building structure detection, agricultural engineering, biomedicine, etc. Shen Ping shared his unique insights into the development prospects and research of this field, encouraging students to understand cross-disciplinary knowledge and conduct exploratory research.

Important for building medical communications

In his lecture, Professor Shen Ping focused on the latest developments in special optical fibers and their sensing applications, and innovations in structure, materials, micro-nano processing, and gave an in-depth introduction to the application of special optical fiber sensors in multiple fields.

Shen Ping said that optical fiber applications are everywhere. For example, the Tsing Ma Bridge connecting Tsing Yi and Ma Wan is the first building in Hong Kong to use a fiber optic sensor detection system, and the “Little Waist” of the Guangzhou TV Tower is also equipped with 400 fiber optic sensors. He continued that about 80% of bridge buildings in the Mainland use fiber optic sensors for building structure monitoring.

What is the significance of special optical fiber to ordinary citizens? Shen Ping pointed out that in the field of communications, for example, special optical fiber can achieve high-speed, large-capacity data transmission, improve communication quality and efficiency; in the medical field, special optical fiber is used in advanced medical equipment, such as laser treatment, optical imaging, etc., to provide support for precision medicine; in addition, it also plays an important role in industry, national defense security, daily communications and other aspects.

Fiber optic sensors are also closely related to the lives of citizens. “Fiber optic sensors for monitoring building structures are mainly used for repair and maintenance.” Shen Ping said that fiber optic sensors, which are about the thickness of a hair, will be close to the bottom of a bridge or building structure. Once they are subjected to external vibrations, these tiny optical fibers will crack, and the laser transmitted in the fiber optic sensor will be reflected or the optical path will change at the crack. This can determine whether there is a problem with the building structure and promptly notify relevant personnel to repair and maintain the building.

Shen Ping believes that “optical fiber is everywhere”, including in the fields of new energy, nanotechnology, agricultural engineering and biomedicine. Shen Ping pointed out that the field of artificial intelligence has developed rapidly in recent years, and knowledge in the field of optoelectronics can be used as a good tool. He encourages students to conduct exploratory research in college.

The “Southern Science Lecture Hall” is a public welfare project of the Southern University of Science and Technology Education Foundation (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. This lecture is jointly organized with the Polytechnic University to provide a platform for the latest knowledge sharing and hot discussions for people who love science and care about cutting-edge technology.
