Pralhad Joshi: Consumer Affairs Minister faces the challenge of managing PDS and buffer stock

– Abhishek G. Dastidar

It is the job of this ministry to ensure food security to everyone through the public distribution system. Apart from this, it is also responsible for various price support systems like purchase of food grains at minimum support prices.

The Department of Consumer Affairs looks after the protection of consumer rights in all sectors. Recently, it has also been active in expanding the scope of redressal of consumer complaints through online medium.

What needs to be done

Management of buffer stock

India is sitting on a rice stock that is four times its buffer target, and now a new crop will be added to it in September. The country needs to find smart ways to make better use of this stock, while also ensuring that the public distribution system is never disrupted

price equilibrium

The government needs to ensure price balance in the purchase of essential commodities so that dependency does not decrease and both producers as well as consumers are satisfied. This has always been a challenge

consumer Rights

The ministry will have to ensure strict enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act and act as a watchdog against unfair trade practices, especially in the current era of e-commerce. It will also have to protect Indian MSMEs by imposing non-tariff barriers on foreign goods while ensuring strict BIS standards.
