Duplantis wins by 0.10 seconds with 10.37 seconds
“After the Olympics, only practice 100m instead of pole”
In a 100m race between two track and field stars who hold world records in the men’s pole vault and 400m hurdles, the winner was the pole vaulter.
Armand Duplantis (24, Sweden) reached the finish line first with a time of 10.37 seconds in the 100m race against Carsten Barholm (28, Norway) held in Zurich, Switzerland on the 5th. Barholm’s record was 10.47 seconds. Duplantis was ahead of Barholm from the start and crossed the finish line without giving up the lead.
Duplantis and Barholm had a heated argument over who would be faster in the 100m dash at the official press conference of the Zurich Diamond League last August, and the actual match took place that day. After the race, Duplantis was delighted in an interview with Reuters, saying, “I feel really good. How could I not be happy?” Barholm admitted defeat, saying, “It was a very fair and good race.”
Duplantis is considered the most popular track and field star after the retirement of Usain Bolt (Jamaica). He holds the world record of 1st to 10th in the men’s pole vault indoors and outdoors, and won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics while setting a new world record.
Barholm is the only athlete to have run the men’s 400m hurdles in the 45-second range (45.94). He won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics with a time of 47.06.
“After the Olympics, I didn’t hold the pole, I just touched the 100m starting blocks,” Duplantis said. “I really like the 100m race. To be honest, I wanted to win.” He handed Barholm a yellow Swedish shirt and asked him to “wear it for the Diamond League men’s 400m hurdles race on the 6th.” It was a penalty given to the loser by the winner of the 100m race.
