Poland (AFP) – Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday that his country would no longer send arms to Ukraine to focus on defending his country.

Poland had been at loggerheads with Ukraine over imports of Ukrainian grain, and had summoned Ukraine’s ambassador hours before the announcement.

Asked by a reporter whether he would continue to support Ukraine despite the disagreement over grain imports, Prime Minister Morawiecki said: “Our country will not provide any more weapons to Ukraine, because we will continue to modernize Poland’s weapons.” answered.

Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last February, Poland has been a particularly loyal supporter of Ukraine and has played a major role in providing weapons. The country also accepts approximately 1 million Ukrainian refugees and provides various types of support as a nation.

But relations between the two countries have sharply deteriorated in recent days after Poland banned imports of Ukrainian grain to protect the interests of its own farmers. (c)AFP
