Planes can fly using oil used for deep frying! The first such initiative in Western Japan is about to begin.

On August 2nd, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture and Japan Airlines signed a new agreement. The agreement is about collecting used cooking oil from households. This is the first such initiative in western Japan…

(Reporter’s report) “If you bring used kitchen oil in a special bottle and pour it into this green box, it will be collected and used as fuel for airplanes.”

Japan Airlines is working towards decarbonization, aiming to replace 10% of its total fleet with sustainable aviation fuel called SAF by 2030. The collected edible oil can be recycled into SAF by being refined at a factory in Sakai City.

Oil collection began at a supermarket in Toyonaka City on the 3rd, and the city and Japan Airlines plan to gradually increase the number of locations where collection is installed.
