Park Cheol-hee, director of the National Diplomatic Academy and a Japan expert who is also known as President Yoon’s diplomatic adviser, has been appointed as South Korea’s new ambassador to Japan.

The new South Korean ambassador to Japan is Park Cheol-hee (61), president of the National Diplomatic Academy, a government-affiliated research institute.

He is a leading Japanese researcher in Korea, having served as director of the Institute of Japanese Studies at Seoul National University and a specially appointed professor at the University of Tokyo, and is also known as President Yoon’s diplomatic adviser.

Japan and South Korea will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations next year, and the presidential office commented that “this is expected to contribute to building a future-oriented relationship.”
