A court of Pakistan officially accused former Prime Minister Imran Khan of revealing government secrets on Wednesday, December 13th (Lindi 22).
Imran Khan’s defense lawyers have not yet reacted to the court’s decision, but the defense lawyer of Pakistan’s former foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in a post on social media, denied media reports that Qureshi and Imran Khan Both are included in this order.
Imran Khan, 71, claimed in March 2022 that the United States was involved in his ouster in collaboration with Pakistan’s powerful military. He has been accused of violating the country’s official secrets protection law and for personal political gain, he has disclosed the secret words of Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States.
Imran Khan claimed that Donald Lowe, the US Deputy Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, apparently asked Asad Majeed Khan, Pakistan’s former ambassador to Washington, to tell Pakistan’s military leadership that Imran Khan is a member of the parliament. The vote of no confidence can be removed, because the former Prime Minister of this country chose not to participate in the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
When Russia launched a full-scale military attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Imran Khan went on an official visit to Moscow and met Russian President Vladimir Putin there.
For a long time, Imran Khan has been presenting these words as proof of his claim that the vote of no confidence in the Pakistani parliament and his removal from power was the result of American interference in Pakistan’s politics.
According to Pakistani media reports, Imran Khan denied these allegations and said that the content of Majid Khan’s diplomatic talks was presented to the media by other sources.
For the first time, the American Intercept published a text in August of this year, which is said to be a conversation between Donald Lowe and Asad Majid Khan, and this letter was written by Majid Khan. In this text, it is claimed that Donald Low threatened that if Imran Khan remains in power in Pakistan, America will isolate this country in the international arena.
According to the lawyers, if Khan is found guilty in this case, according to the law, he will face 14 years in prison and even the death penalty. This is the second time that Khan has been formally convicted of leaking government secrets.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan said in relation to the first decision that the correct procedure was not followed in this case.
In early August, Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for selling government souvenirs during his presidency from 2018 to 2022.
Although Imran Khan was acquitted of some charges, he remains in prison for inciting his followers to violence and exposing government secrets. He was banned from participating in the election due to corruption charges, but Imran Khan’s legal team is trying to get him released on bail and the sentence revoked.
But the recent decision of the Pakistani court, officially accusing Imran Khan of revealing government secrets, reduces his chances of being released from prison and participating in the election campaign.
